28 kW Solar Project for Newark Science Park High School (submittal to EYP Architects)

Project Data

End User: Newark Park High School

Installer: Railroad Electric

Location:Newark, NJ

Date of Install: Nov 2005 - April 2006

Size of System in kW: 30

Project Developer: TurtleEnergy

Special Challenges Met: Architect’s design.

Complete Project Team:

Electrical Engineer: EYP Electrical Engineers

Architect: EYP Architects

Structural Engineer: EYP Structural Engineers

Project Brief:

TurtleEnergy undertook a detailed analysis of the site. This analysis was comprised of the following steps and implementation.

Shading Analysis

Optimal System Design and Concept Planning

Industrial Design of the Components of the System

Multi-Disciplinary Coordination with Architects, Structural Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Construction Managers (Stellar Energy Solutions)

The project commenced in May of 2006 and was successfully completed

The building and PV system was designed by architects

Einhorn Yaffee Prescott. The design of the PV system underwent some modifications by Turtle Energy. The PV system was finally built Sept 2006 through November 2006. This was some 2 years after being originally bid, in the meantime the module  manufacturer Astropower had been boughtout by GE. However Turtle Energy provided a service to the contractor such that the system was built without a hitch.

The Newark Board of Eduction put out to bid the entire process of building  Newark Science Park High School. The Photovoltatic system was one of these individual bids. Turtle Energy  provided a system quote and expertise to enable RCC Electric to win the bid for the PV system.  Newark Science Park High School is a 250,000-s.f. magnet science, mathematics, and technology high school that will serve as a model for urban school districts in New Jersey and throughout the country. TurtleEnergy excels at designing photovoltaic (PV) arrays so that efficiency is optimized for both the dimensions and orientation of the given area and costs are kept to a minimum. Project design and planning services by TurtleEnergy’s designers and managers yields over 50 years of cominbed experience. TurtleEnergy ensures that each system is performing to the maximum potential at the end of each installation. Measuring power output from each sector of the photovoltaic array is part of TurtleEnergy’s distinguishable service to its end users. From the start of the Newark Science Park High School project, TurtleEnergy’s designers determined optimal opportunities to generate electricity at the point of use, transforming a relatively unused space into a useful source of revenue. TurtleEnergy continues to ensure that the system is performing at its optimal level long after the installation has been completed via its remote energy monitoring system that is checked on a daily basis at TurtleEnergy’s headquarters. Ongoing measurement of the energy production is a key hallmark of TurtleEnergy and differentiates it as a full service renewable energy company. Fat Spaniel’s integrated Satcon inverter direct internet-based monitoring system was implemented for the Newark Science Park High School project. The Fat Spaniel data acquisition system, logs the actual energy generation by the PV system. The resulting measurements are in compliance with the predicted analysis done by TurtleEnergy. The Fat Spaniel system data monitoring results are available both on a real-time and historical basis. Measurements can be viewed on daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or lifetime intervals. For additional information on product specifications see the appropriate cut sheets listed below.
